When To Go
A Rough guide on the best months
Please bear in mind this guide is based on the weather conditions we have experienced since we opened the venue.
March
The lake is not officially open in March due to the possibility of bad winter conditions. However, we will, on occasion, take bookings from specialist carp anglers who are used to fishing all year round. Subject to conditions, good winter fishing can be enjoyed.
April
The first signs of spring! The lake is now open. After the winter rest and the carp waking up, the fishing - as you would expect - can be excellent. Also, be aware that the global climate is in disarray. In previous Aprils we have experienced temperatures in the upper 20s and, at the other end of the scale, snow showers. We recommend April for the specialist angler who fishes all the year round and so is used to the vagaries of early spring carp fishing.
May
Spring arrives in the South of France. Temperatures soar, rapidly warming the water, and the carp are feeding big time. Chateau Cavagnac gives of its best as the carp pack on the weight in readiness to spawn. An excellent time to catch one of the lake’s monster carp or to enjoy action of a lifetime. However, at some point in May and June, the carp will spawn which can slow down the action for a few days.
June
Another hectic month as the water hits peak feeding temperature. The angler who times his visit after the carp have finished spawning is likely to experience fishing of a lifetime as the carp go on a feeding frenzy. The only complaint you will have is sleep deprivation!
July/August
The lake is in its full Summer glory with the temperatures, normally, in the mid to upper twenties. July and August are favourite months with Cavagnac regulars who have learned that the hotter it gets, the more our bigger residents feed. Note: Some anglers are put off by the high price of fares published by Ryanair at this popular holiday time. Our advice is to reserve your place and then wait four – six weeks prior to your visit when the flight prices rapidly drop. Larry will be happy to monitor the Ryanair site on your behalf and advise you of the best time to book.
September
Another special month for the angler seeking a monster carp. Water temperatures are still high and the weather is still, normally, glorious. The carp instinctively sense autumn is coming and start feeding heavily to pack on weight for winter.
October/November
Glorious October! The traditional month, in England, for the best late year action and it’s no different in the South of France. The only difference being that if you get the weather right you can enjoy temperatures in the low to mid twenties in October and even November. That’s what we call autumn/early winter carping at it’s best.
